The Municipality of Limassol is once again participating in European Mobility Week, which will take place from 16 to 22 September 2026, under the central theme “Mobility for Everyone” and the local slogan “Limassol Moves Laou Laou.”
The Cypriot expression laou laou means moving slowly, gently and at an easy pace.
This year’s programme is co-organised by the Municipality of Limassol, the Limassol Tourism Development and Promotion Company, Friends of the Earth Cyprus and OPU – Organization for Positive Urbanism.
European Mobility Week is Europe’s leading initiative promoting sustainable urban mobility. It encourages cities and citizens to try safer, more sustainable and inclusive ways of getting around.
This year’s programme in Limassol focuses on accessibility, cycling, public transport, road safety, active mobility and the better use of public space.
Daily travel around the city is not the same for everyone. A child walking to school has different needs from an older person who requires safe pavements and places to rest. A parent with a pushchair faces different challenges from a person with a disability or reduced mobility. This year’s European Mobility Week reminds us that urban planning must take these different experiences into account so that mobility options are safe, accessible and fair for everyone—both today and for future generations.
The slogan “Limassol Moves Laou Laou” invites residents and visitors to step away from the fast pace of everyday life, move more slowly and mindfully, and experience the city differently—with more room for walking, cycling, meeting, playing, participating and creating.
The week’s main event will be Car Free Day, which will take place on Sunday, 20 September 2026, from 11:00 to 20:00, on Gladstonos Street.
For one day, the area will be given over to pedestrians, families, children, cyclists, visitors, organisations, city institutions and local businesses. The area’s professionals and shopkeepers will play an important role in the event, participating actively with their own activities and initiatives.
The aim is to create a temporary public space for walking, playing, creativity, social interaction, sustainable mobility and meaningful engagement with the local community.
Car Free Day will feature activities for children, young people, families, older people, cyclists and people with disabilities. The programme will include information stands, road-safety education, creative workshops, accessibility initiatives and presentations on sustainable and smart mobility.
The day will also include the launch event for the cooperation agreement between the Municipalities of Limassol, Polemidia and Amathus, the University of Cyprus and Frederick University.
The agreement concerns the development of an integrated plan for sustainable mobility, spatial planning and urban regeneration, as well as the preparation of pilot initiatives supporting safer, more accessible and climate-neutral transport.
The week’s programme will also include cycling routes; discussions about inclusive cities and transport poverty; an exhibition basketball game by the AMENA team, featuring people with autism and mobility impairments; a CORESpaces workshop on Green Routes; accessibility activities; and a seminar on urban aesthetics and mobility networks.
Admission to all activities is free.
Members of the public are invited to participate actively in the week’s activities, particularly Car Free Day. Families are encouraged to bring their children, bicycles or scooters and experience Limassol in a different, safer, more accessible and people-centred way.
