Water is precious in Cyprus. With long dry summers and limited rainfall, every drop counts. The good news? Small daily changes at home can save a lot of water without making life harder. Here are simple, practical ways every household can help.
1. Fix leaks fast
A dripping tap or leaking toilet can waste hundreds of litres each month. Check taps, pipes, and toilet tanks regularly. If you hear water running when everything is off, it’s time to fix it.
2. Be smart in the bathroom
- Take shorter showers. Cutting just 2–3 minutes saves a lot of water.
- Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving.
- Install low-flow showerheads and dual-flush toilets if possible. They work well and save water every day.
- Pour the water after bathing into a bucket ( I do it every time after bathing a baby) and use it later for flushing toilets.
3.Use the washing machine wisely
Only run the washing machine or dishwasher when they are full. Choose eco or short programs. These use less water and energy and still get the job done.

4. Reuse water when you can
Water from washing vegetables or waiting for the shower to heat up can be collected and used to water plants or clean outdoor areas.
5.Save water in the garden
- Sweep patios and driveways instead of hosing them down.
- Water plants early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation.
- Use drip irrigation instead of sprinklers.
- Choose local, drought-resistant plants that need less water.
6. Get everyone involved
Talk to children and family members about saving water. Simple habits, when shared by everyone, make a big difference.
Saving water is not about giving things up, it’s about using water wisely. When we all do our part, we protect Cyprus’s future, reduce costs, and set a good example for others.
