In the past week, two sustainability stories have stood out in Cyprus to me: one highlighting creative, culture-driven sustainable fashion, and the other showcasing measurable environmental impact through community action.
Redefining Cypriot Fashion Heritage Through Sustainable Design
Cyprus continues to explore innovative ways to integrate sustainability into cultural expression. The Fashion Heritage Network Cyprus — a youth-led initiative evolving from collaboration with the Royal Commonwealth Society is redefining how fashion and sustainability intersect on the island.
Rather than treating sustainability as a foreign trend, the Network grounds its work in Cypriot cultural heritage. It draws upon centuries-old craftsmanship and traditional techniques such as weaving, embroidery and natural textiles — and infuses them with modern, zero-waste design principles.
Through exhibitions, community programmes and collaborations between emerging designers and local artisans, the initiative demonstrates how cultural identity and environmental awareness can be combined to build a sustainability-focused creative economy.
The Fashion Heritage Network Cyprus brought together emerging young designers with traditional artisans, encouraging hands-on learning of endangered crafts such as lefkaritiko embroidery, weaving and traditional textile techniques.
Participants worked collaboratively with heritage experts, repurposing fabrics and using natural dyes, transforming cultural knowledge into contemporary, sustainable fashion pieces.
The resulting exhibition drew in audiences of all ages, with many older visitors expressing pride and nostalgia upon seeing traditional techniques creatively reimagined by the new generation.
By fostering intergenerational exchange and cross-community participation, the event not only showcased sustainable design but also strengthened cultural pride and unity across diverse Cypriot communities. (Source: https://www.royalcwsociety.org/)
City Friends Club: Nearly 200 Tonnes of Waste Removed Across Cyprus
In a major environmental impact update published this past week, City Friends Club — a Cyprus-based environmental non-profit, reported that it removed nearly 200 tonnes of waste across the island in 2025.
The organisation’s achievements include:
- 198,406 kg of garbage removed from cities, streets, parks and illegal dumping sites through daily cleaning and organised volunteer cleanups.
- 46 volunteer and corporate clean-up events with about 2,461 participants in Limassol, Paphos and Larnaca.
- Restoration efforts after wildfires, where teams helped clear burned debris and support local communities.
- 530 trees planted in collaboration with corporate partners.
City Friends Club also expanded waste-prevention initiatives, such as Coffee Friends Club, which encouraged reusable cup use and prevented more than 25,000 disposable cups from entering landfills in 2025.
Importantly, the organisation has achieved ISO 14001 environmental management certification, making it the first environmental NGO in Cyprus to meet this international standard. (Source: https://en.politis.com.cy/)
