When you live in a place like Cyprus, with its long summers and laid-back rhythm, the usual approach to fashion often misses the mark. That’s exactly what led the founder of Sensate Aleksandra Kazaryan to create something different—a boutique focused on natural fabrics, thoughtful design. In this interview, she talks about the challenges of starting from scratch, what makes a piece of clothing truly worth owning, and why mindful shopping might have more to do with self-awareness than style

The name “Sensate” is so interesting. What does it mean to you, and how does it reflect your brand’s values?
Thank you for this question. The name Sensate comes from our slogan, “Sensate all days of your life,” which means embracing each day fully—being present, noticing the beauty around you, and appreciating what truly matters. This philosophy reflects our core values: freedom and natural beauty.
What inspired you to start Sensate in Cyprus?
After living in Cyprus for nearly five years, I noticed that the global fashion industry is largely tailored to people living in continental climates. As a result, finding appropriate clothing here often requires significant effort. The mass market lacks suitable options for our lifestyle, and many local brands focus primarily on beachwear, party outfits, or clothing for photo shoots—great for vacation, but not ideal for everyday life.
That’s what inspired me to create a shopping experience that’s both easy and enjoyable for women in Cyprus, with a focus on our relaxed lifestyle and unique climate.
Sensate is known as an eco-boutique. What materials or practices do you prioritize to reduce environmental impact?
At Sensate, we use 100% natural fabrics, which is a fundamental part of our mission. We also see it as our responsibility to raise awareness about the fashion industry’s significant contribution to environmental pollution—nearly on par with the coal industry.
Every year, over 100 billion garments are produced, and 60% are discarded within the first year of purchase. Synthetic fabrics like polyester can take over 200 years to decompose. We believe a one-time wear blouse is never worth that kind of environmental cost.

Can you share some tips on how to identify clothing made from natural materials—beyond just reading the labels?
A good rule of thumb: if something looks overly polished at first glance, it’s probably not natural. Natural fabrics usually have a more matte finish and may wrinkle more easily. In contrast, synthetic fabrics often appear unnaturally smooth, shiny, or wrinkle-resistant. They also lack the comfort of natural materials—they become static, don’t keep you warm in winter, and don’t breathe in hot weather.
Who designs your collections, and where are the items produced?
Our current collection is produced by Cinta, a Russian brand with its own manufacturing facilities. They work with exceptional materials, like weightless muslin and premium Belarusian softened linen. This luxurious linen is enzyme-washed during production to make it softer, skin-friendly, and less prone to shrinkage.
We value Cinta for their excellent taste, high-quality tailoring, and commitment to natural fabrics. And we’re excited to collaborate with more exceptional brands in the future—stay tuned for our new arrivals!
Who is the ideal Sensate customer?
A Sensate woman is someone who seeks to be feminine and attractive without crossing into vulgarity or banality. She appreciates her natural beauty and chooses to highlight it with subtle elegance and charm. She avoids excess and strives for authenticity.
How do you balance style and sustainability, especially with fast-changing trends?
Fashion trends fall into two categories: short-term and long-term. We avoid short-lived trends that only last a season. Instead, our designers focus on timeless cuts that will remain stylish for years to come. However, we do incorporate trendy colors to keep our collection fresh—an easy way to stay current without compromising our commitment to sustainable fashion.
Some might find Sensate clothing expensive. What would you say to them?
I always encourage people to try on our clothes and feel the quality. You’ll immediately notice the difference compared to mass-market options or even typical linen garments.
Linen production is a time- and labor-intensive process, so high-quality natural linen is never cheap. As I mentioned earlier, our linen is also specially treated for softness and durability.
Many people have experienced the disappointment of tossing a favorite item after just one wash or one season. Our garments, on the other hand, are built to last—thanks to durable fabrics, expert tailoring, and timeless designs. If you divide the cost of, say, a dress by the number of years you’ll wear it (four to five, easily), it becomes a real investment in your wardrobe.
And because of our versatile styles, you can dress our pieces up or down with different accessories for various occasions. That’s what conscious shopping is all about—choosing fewer, better pieces that serve you well over time.

What’s been your biggest challenge in building Sensate—and your proudest moment so far?
As with most businesses, the hardest part was getting started. For me, the biggest initial challenge was finding reliable suppliers. While wholesale platforms were an easy option, I wanted to offer something truly unique and high-quality. So I focused on independent brands and designers—many of whom weren’t set up for wholesale. It took months of searching, but I finally found the perfect pieces that fit the island lifestyle.
I’m also proud that we’ve been the first in Cyprus to elevate muslin and linen from casual basics to quiet luxury. Starting a fashion business requires significant investment, but working with limited resources has been a blessing in disguise. It pushed me to think creatively and develop non-traditional solutions to satisfy our customers.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone trying to shop more consciously, what would it be?
Mindful shopping is a powerful habit—it saves money, time, and helps you build a functional wardrobe. And perhaps most importantly, it frees you from the frustrating feeling of “nothing to wear.”
To start, try identifying what’s stopping you from shopping mindfully. Are you influenced too much by trends or marketing? Do you use shopping to cope with stress? Or maybe you struggle with self-acceptance, which leads to an unclear personal style and random purchases?
Some people also buy cheap clothes thinking they’re saving money, only to replace them constantly due to poor quality. This kind of behavior often reflects deeper patterns that affect other parts of life too.
Unconscious shopping usually signals something bigger. Once you understand those underlying causes, you can improve not only your wardrobe but your overall lifestyle.
