Recently, a representative of the government of Cyprus has stated that each resident of the island must save 14 liters water daily. This measure is necessary due to the drought and the expected worsening of the situation in 2026. As you know, I live in Cyprus so I started wondering whether it is actually possible to save 14 l. a day. Here is what I found.
1. Cut Your Shower Time
Apparently, shortening our shower by just 2 minutes, we can save up to 18 liters of water. That’s not that hard.
💡 Pro Tip: Installing a low-flow showerhead will help maximize savings.
2. Turn Off the Tap While Brushing
Most people leave the tap running while brushing, wasting up to 8 liters per minute. Turning it off can save up to 16 liters per day (brushing twice). And just like that: only this habit can be enough to reach the target.
3. Fix Leaks in Toilets and Faucets
A slow leak may seem harmless, but it can waste up to 20 liters a day. Fixing leaks is one of the easiest and most overlooked ways to save water at home.
4. Use a Bowl to Wash Fruits and Vegetables
Washing produce under a running tap can use 10 liters or more. Instead, rinse them in a bowl and reuse the water for plants—saving both water and effort.
5. Run Your Dishwasher Only When Full
I don’t have one. But dishwashers use 10–15 liters per cycle, so make each run count. Wait until it’s full before turning it on, and you’ll save water without sacrificing cleanliness.
6. Upgrade or Modify Your Toilet Flush
Modern dual-flush toilets let you control the water used per flush.
7. Water Plants With a Can, Not a Hose
Hoses can use 10 liters per minute. Switching to a watering can for small gardens helps control usage and reduce waste, especially during hot seasons.
Sample Daily Water Saving Plan
| Action | Water Saved (Liters) |
|---|---|
| Turn off tap while brushing (2x) | 16 |
| Wash fruits in a bowl | 8 |
| Use watering can instead of hose | 10 |
| Total | 34 liters |
Just combining a few habits can more than double my 14-liter goal!
Water conservation doesn’t require drastic lifestyle changes. Just small daily actions can make a huge impact—on the water bill, on the environment, and on the future. Whether we are saving 14 liters or 40, every drop counts especially in countries like Cyprus.
