Sustainable Choices for Moms: Reduce Waste Today

As a mom of two I naturally want the best for my children— and that includes a healthy planet for them to live in. At the same time it scares me how many products I use as a mom which probably just contribute to pollution: diapers, breastfeeding disposable pads, wet wipes, etc. So, I started exploring alternatives: a few thoughtful swaps I can make to benefit my family and the environment.

Started with diapers. Traditional disposable diapers take centuries to decompose, but cloth diapers or biodegradable options significantly reduce waste. I am currently thinking of switching to a biodegradable brand of diapers. Already used one of them a few times and very happy with it. In one of the future posts I will share more information on it. I still cant see myself using reusable nappies. If you can, probably that’s also a great option.

Breastfeeding pads is another product where a swap to reusable pads will be done. Until recently I was using disposable pads. Yes, they are very convenient but for a minute I just thought how much garbage I create with them and started looking for alternatives. I am in a process of ordering some reusable pads which can be washed and used again and again.

With the second child I decided not to overbuy clothes. Children grow so fast and relatives and friends often bring clothes and toys as gifts. I got just a few things before my baby was born in different sizes and then continue to buy only when I need something.

When shopping I seek out brands committed to sustainability — whether it’s for clothing, toys, or personal care. Certifications like GOTS (for organic textiles) or B Corp can guide you toward ethical, earth-friendly companies.

Second-hand items for your baby: with my first-born I bought everything new and many of the items were either not used or used for a very short time. With my second child I was smarter and in my opinion, here is a list of the items you can probably consider buying second-hand:

  • crib
  • rocking chair
  • stroller (especially the carry cot which is used for the first 6 months)
  • baby play gym
  • high chair

The list can go on but it depends on your preferences. For example, I wanted for a stroller and a car-seat to be new, but didn’t mind for a crib, next-to-me sleeping bed and some other items to be second-hand.

Embracing eco-friendly living is a journey, not a destination. Every choice you make, no matter how small, contributes to a cleaner, greener future for your children. Start where you can, and let your commitment to sustainability grow with your family. 🌿

What are the eco-swaps you did as a parent?
